Are You A Social Networking Twit?

The latest craze in social networking is microblogging through sites like Twitter – a form of communication similar to SMS. They say that microblogging is a great way to share with others what you’re up to in any given moment.

There has been a lot written recently about microblogging and the amount of time it can take out of your regular routine. My rider to that is simple – if you let it. For social networking it appears to be quite successful. It appears to be an ideal way of getting your message out very quickly – as in instantaneously. As Twitter says:

With Twitter, you can stay hyper–connected to your friends and always know what they’re doing. Or, you can stop following them any time. You can even set quiet times on Twitter so you’re not interrupted.

From my perspective, I have to agree with those that question the time factor. Sending out and reading a large number of ‘tweets’ can be time consuming and there is always a danger of becoming sidetracked. It is certainly worth playing around with, but like any activity in the social networking scene – set some limits on yourself and your time before you start.

I truly agree with you. The future of social marketing is mobile devices. When Twitter becomes really effective is when you have a phone with a decent size screen. In text messages hyperlinks become clickable. However this will do you little good if the site at the end of the link is not formatted for a mobile device.

If your site cannot be viewed decently on a 240 pixel wide (or less) screen then what difference does it make?

If you do not think web enabled devices with larger screens are more likely to produce results. Look at it like this, iPhone users are 50 more times apt to Google terms from the phone.

Of course this is skewed by the fact that there are a larger number of iPhones than other devices. But it does show that the future is coming and it is coming to your phone.
