How Global Is Social Media?
Writing by Brick Marketing on Sunday, August 17, 2008
Royal.Pingdom undertook a study of 12 leading social sites to see where they gained the most traffic. The results were quite surprising and for social marketing and social networking purposes, quite revealing. To summarize their results:
MySpace:This is the only social site that showed the US as the major source of traffic. Puerto Rico and Australia filled second and third.
Facebook: Facebook was the only one to really show a global source of traffic. Turkey, Canada and the United Kingdom were the top three, however most other countries where close behind.
Hi5: This site has a predominately Central American flavor with Peru, Portugal and El Salvadore being the top countries.
Friendster: Friendster derives the majority of its traffic from SE Asia, predominantly Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.
LinkedIn: India by mile leads the traffic flow at LinkedIn followed by Netherlands and Denmark.
Orkut:Brazil, Paraguay and India supply most of the traffic to Orkut.
LastFM: LastFM also has a rather broad international visitor base. The leading countries where Finland, Croatia and Estonia.
LiveJournal: Singapore, Russia and Belarus lead the way although the US came in fourth.
Xanga: Hong Kong, the US and Singapore were the most popular countries to send traffic.
Bebo: Given it’s UK base, it’s not surprising that Ireland delivered the most traffic followed by New Zealand and the UK.
Twitter: Japan and Taiwan sent the most number of readers followed by the US.
You can draw your own conclusions from this data; however, particularly those paying for advertising on these sites may do well to think about where they want their traffic to come from. For US visitors, it seems that Facebook, Myspace and Twitter are your best bets.
Information like this can be quite valuable when it comes to planning your social marketing campaigns. You can focus on those sites that have visitors from your targeted regions.
